This is the first blog post in a series featuring local artists, small business owners, and wedding vendors in Mississippi! For this post I interviewed Kelsey Mason of Southern Strokes, an artist based in Brookhaven, MS. Kelsey can make many items that brides might like to incorporate into their wedding, including place cards, invitation envelopes, banners, chalkboards, table numbers and speed paintings! She also makes many beautiful pieces that would make excellent bridesmaid gifts. She also has items that are great for parents, families, and graduating seniors!
What services and items do you usually offer?
I do drawings, acrylic paintings, mixed media art, custom paintings, hand lettered canvases or wooden signs, invitation envelopes, place cards, hand lettered banners, chalkboards, hand-lettered cards, hand lettered tea towels, ornaments, baby arrival boards, gender reveal canvases, and photo backdrops and one of my favorites— you can get me to come do a speed painting for your event! It’s so fun!
Where are you based?
I am from the best town ever— Brookhaven, MS. You can also find me on Instagram @southern.strokes or my Etsy shop: Southernstrokeskm
How long have you been an artist, and at what point did you decide to offer your services?
I’ve drawn, painted and played around with all things art related for as far back as I can remember. My mom says I started drawing when I was around 3 years old! Haha! I’ve always kind of offered my services to friends and family surrounding me, but after art lessons and getting college experience in the art world, then I decided to let more people know about my business! I just started my Instagram business in 2019, while I’ve had my Etsy for a while. I enjoy both but I really love getting to know my client and meeting them!
What kind of person might be interested in purchasing your artwork or getting a custom piece created?
I feel like my art and products relate to all! From simple hand lettered gifts to a multiple week masterpiece I offer it all! I have things that will interest kids, teens, and adults… I also love to do custom senior and wedding gifts! Big news: I’m also starting art lessons!!
What is your favorite art to create?
Oh my goodness that’s so hard! I enjoy it all so much… I do love abstracts though, that’s when I get really creative!
What is your favorite part of creating custom artwork for a client?
I’m honored to get to create anything for my clients! I love seeing the looks on their face or hearing how much they enjoy the piece!
Where do you find inspiration?
First, I find my Inspiration from God.. the master painter and creator of our lives and every story, the greatest artist ever. I also find inspiration from nature, my friends, family, and just life in general!
What are a few of your favorite mediums to work with?
Acrylic is one of my favorites. I enjoy pencil, charcoal, ink, and playing around with watercolors! I also do mixed media.
Where can interested readers find more about you and your artwork?
They can find more about me on my Instagram! @southern.strokes and I also have an Etsy – southernstrokeskm
What is the best way for a potential client to contact you?
The best way for them to contact me is by calling or messaging me at 601-754-8988, a DM on instagram or a msg on Etsy!!
