Wedding Advice – Detail Images

This is the first installment of my series of blog posts on how to get the best images on your wedding day! I am beginning the series with detail images, because photographing details is the first thing I will do when arriving to your wedding. These tips may offer advice or inspiration to you, and will help me quickly take beautiful and timeless images of the important small details of your day. I know you have put so much time into making sure every detail of your wedding is perfect, and I want to make sure those meaningful details are well represented in your final gallery of images.

Collect all of your detail items you want photographed and place them in a box. This helps ensure that on the day of the wedding they are easy to find and I can photograph them quickly. It also helps prevent important items from being left out of photos. Some items you might want to put in the box to be photographed are:

• Perfume bottle
• Earrings
• Engagement and wedding rings
• Necklace
• Bracelet
• Stationary, which could include wedding program, invitations, save the dates, or any other paper goods.
• Wax seals or other stationary related items

Some detail items that you might want photographed, but should put beside the box, rather than in it:

• Veil
• Bouquet
• Shoes

You can also organize the groom’s details into a box if you would like. Some of the groom’s items you might like to have photographed are:

• Cuff links
• Cologne bottle
• Watch
• Tie
• Tie clip
• Shoes

Ask your florist for a few loose flowers or pieces of greenery to be used in your detail photos. It’s beautiful, and helps to visually tie all of your images from the day together.

Invest in a velvet ring box. If you don’t want to splurge on a custom box, you can order velvet boxes from Amazon or Etsy for around $20. These boxes are more affordable, and come in a wide range of colors, so you can get one that will match your wedding colors. I recommend choosing a box that has a slot for both your engagement and wedding ring.

If you simply announced your wedding in the newspaper rather than sending out invitations, consider bringing the newspaper clipping to be photographed along with some of your details. If you do this, be sure to clip out the date the newspaper was published, too.

If you do use invitations or other stationary, I would love for you to send me a copy of it! That lets me get a feel for your wedding colors and I can make sure I have ribbon and other detail styling accessories to match. If I have a copy of your stationary items I can bring them with me to your wedding, that way if you forget to bring them, there will be a back up! Having pictures of your stationary along with your rings and other details will take your images to the next level.

I would love to photograph your reception area before your guests have arrived so that I can document all of the flowers and other decor. I know that you have worked hard to design the wedding reception of your dreams! The best time for this will depend on your timeline, so keep reception area photography in mind while planing your day.

Your wedding dress will look best on a wooden or decorative hanger, rather than on a plain plastic or wire hanger.
